MKT 393 Portfolio. Insight into the daily life of a marketing intern
Hi everyone, I’m Eliza Redes, going into my senior year at DePaul as a marketing major. Currently, I am interning with Techcomp in Edinburgh, Scotland, where I work for their subsidiary, Edinburgh Instruments.
A Day in the Life of My Internship:
Morning Routine: I start my day by arriving at the office at 8:30 am. The first thing I do is get situated at my desk, grab a coffee, and review what I’ll be working on that day or week. I check my email and Teams for any updates from my supervisor, the head of marketing, and team members then review my calendar to prepare for any meetings or deadlines. This quiet time helps me plan my tasks and set priorities, ensuring I am organized and ready for the day ahead. Every Monday at 9:30 AM, we have our MMM (Monday Morning Meeting). The marketing team, consisting of about ten members, gathers to discuss our goals and tasks for the week. We go around the room, and each person shares their top priorities. This meeting is essential for aligning our efforts and ensuring everyone is on the same page.
Daily Tasks: My daily tasks vary, but recently, I’ve been focusing on a few key areas:
1. Competitor Research: One of my key tasks is researching our competitors’ social media posts. I analyze their strategies, identify trends, and compile a list of ideas for our platforms. This involves looking at the types of content they share, the engagement they receive, and how frequently they post. I then present my findings to the team to help us stay competitive and engage effectively with our audience.
2. Website Updates: I spend a significant amount of time creating text for updating our website. This includes writing and optimizing sentences for SEO to ensure our content is search-friendly and can attract more visitors. I use tools like Google Analytics to track the performance of our website and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, I uploaded the information into our website and ensure they are properly integrated into the site.
3. Issue Correction and News Writing: Recently, I found some errors on our main website and took the initiative to fix them. This required attention to detail and a good understanding of our branding. Additionally, I noticed that we hadn’t posted any news articles of the parent website for over a year. To address this, I’ve been writing new news articles for all of Techcomp, including Edinburgh Instruments, Scion, Precisa, Froilabo, Edinburgh Sensors, Dynamica, and Isotopx and uploaded the new posts to our head.
Lunch Break: Around midday, I take a break and join the team for a walk to Morrisons, a local supermarket. It’s a great way to unwind, get some fresh air, and bond with my colleagues. We often discuss non-work-related topics, which helps build a sense of camaraderie and makes the workplace more enjoyable.
Afternoon Projects: After lunch, I dive back into my projects. This often involves more detailed work on the tasks I started in the morning. Whether it's fine-tuning social media strategies, continuing website improvements, or drafting news articles, I stay busy and productive.
Reflections on My Internship: Working at Edinburgh Instruments has been an incredible experience. The company is a medium-sized enterprise, with about 200 employees, which means I get to work closely with a tight-knit team and take on a variety of responsibilities.
1. Research and Analytical Skills: By studying competitors and analyzing marketing data, I’ve honed my ability to gather and interpret information to make informed decisions.
2. Writing and Content Creation: Crafting SEO-optimized content and news articles has improved my writing skills and taught me how to communicate effectively with different audiences.
3. Attention to Detail: Fixing website errors and ensuring content accuracy has highlighted the importance of attention to detail in maintaining a professional online presence.
4. Project Management: Managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines has enhanced my organizational and time management skills.
5. Team Collaboration: Working closely with my team and participating in brainstorming sessions has taught me the value of collaboration and the importance of clear communication.
One of the most valuable aspects of this experience has been understanding the inner workings of a marketing team in a global setting. I’ve gained insights into strategic planning, the importance of adaptability, and how to effectively communicate within a team.
Overall, my time at Edinburgh Instruments has been highly rewarding. The skills and experiences I’ve gained here will undoubtedly benefit me in my future career in marketing.
